WILLISTON, N.D. — The Valley City Post 60 Royals saw their unbeaten postseason run come to an end Saturday, falling 12-3 to the Devils Lake Storm in the Class A State Legion Baseball Tournament.
Devils Lake broke a scoreless tie in the second inning on a wild pitch that brought in a pair of runs before adding another run in the third. Will Heilman delivered an RBI single as the Storm built a 3-0 advantage and never looked back.
The Royals battled back with three runs but were unable to slow a Devils Lake offense that finished with 11 hits and played error-free defense.
Leighton Hendrickson took the loss for Valley City after allowing three runs, one earned, on two hits over three innings. Heilman earned the win for the Storm, surrendering three runs on five hits while striking out seven over seven innings.
Valley City’s offense was limited to five hits, with Hendrickson, James Schwehr, Jack Samuelson, Trevor Fetsch and Bryson Heck each recording one. Andrew Sykora, Samuelson and Heck each drove in a run.
Hunter Remmick led Devils Lake from the bottom of the order, going 2-for-4 with three RBIs, while Benjamin Larson collected three hits in three at-bats. Brody Rainsberry added two hits as the Storm advanced to the state championship game.
Valley City will look to keep its season alive Sunday when it faces the Fargo Post 2 Jets in an elimination game at 1 p.m.
