Bowling Green — Robert E. Smith Sr., 83, of Rockfield, Kentucky, passed away peacefully at home on December 26, 2025.
He was born on February 8, 1942, in Louisville, Kentucky, to the late Burton Smith and Clara Mae Sharpe Smith. He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Patricia Lou Smith.
Robert was a 1960 graduate of Valley High School in Louisville, where he excelled in football and track. He continued his education at Western Kentucky University, where he proudly lettered in football.
His love for sports and mentoring young people led him to a meaningful career as a teacher and coach at Doss High School in Louisville, where he made a lasting impact on countless students and athletes. Later in life, he went on to own and operate his own construction business, a testament to his strong work ethic and determination.
Robert had a deep love for the outdoors, especially hunting and fishing, passions he enjoyed sharing with family and friends. He was active in his church and treasured time spent with those he loved. Known for his friendly spirit, Robert truly never met a stranger and was the kind of man who would give the shirt off his back to anyone in need. He was an extremely hard-working man, respected and loved by all who knew him.
He leaves behind his three children, Rob Smith, Philip Smith (Rebecca Gibson), and Michael Smith (Lolitta Richey); seven grandchildren; and one great-grandchild, all of whom will cherish his memory and the legacy he leaves behind.
A Celebration of Life service will be held on January 17, 2026, at Providence Knob Baptist Church in Rockfield, Kentucky. Visitation will be from 10:00 a.m. until 1:00 p.m., with the service beginning at 1:00 p.m.
