MOORESVILLE, Ind. (WISH) — Floodwaters continue to block roads in parts of Madison Township a day after firefighters rescued several people and pets from rising water.

The flooding nearly swallowed cars and hid roads beneath the surface, cutting off access to several areas. Heavy flooding forced Madison Township Fire Department crews into rescue mode Sunday. By Monday, water still made many routes impassable. One driver attempted to enter a flooded road before backing out.

Firefighters say turning around is the right decision.

“Water can actually rush underneath the soil and actually wash away the road which you wouldn’t see unless you drive over it,” Brandon Perry, public information officer for the Madison Township Fire Department said. “There could be a rip current underneath of the surface of the water and take your vehicle away, along with the deep water that could ultimately drown your vehicle like behind me.”

Firefighters rescued two people from their cars after they tried to drive through the water. Perry said no one was injured. In Mooresville, a tow truck pulled another car from the water after it became stuck.

“Doesn’t matter who you are, what vehicle you drive, whether it’s a big lifted truck, big Jeep, if the road is closed, it’s closed for a reason, and you need to abide by that and not drive through flooded waters,” Perry said.

The flooding has already damaged property. With water still covering some areas, Perry said it could take time to determine the full extent of the damage.

“Water levels are hopefully starting to reside, so that’ll be a chance for us to hopefully start doing a little bit of a damage assessment, kind of figure out what exactly the next steps in the process are,” Perry said.
