Road reopens after fiery semi crash from I-196 overpass near Saugatuck

ALLEGAN COUNTY, MI – The road under a highway overpass where a fiery semitruck crash happened near Saugatuck earlier this week has finally reopened to traffic.

Old Allegan Road reopened under the I-196 overpass on Friday, Dec. 2, said Michigan Department of Transportation spokesperson Jocelyn Garza.

The roadway had been closed since the Monday, Dec. 29 crash, which involved a semi plunging off the I-196 overpass onto Old Allegan Road and erupting into flames.

Police said the semi was northbound on I-196 when it lost control and crashed off the overpass, landing on the road below. The driver of the semi was helped from the rig by a passerby and taken to a hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

Garza said it is still not clear what kind of repairs the roadway will require or a timeline for repairs, but that MDOT may have a clearer picture of the needed repairs next week after further material testing and analysis of inspection reports.

MDOT reopened a single lane of northbound I-196 to traffic on Tuesday. Garza said there still is not a time frame for when both lanes of the northbound highway would reopen.

Southbound I-196 has remained open.
