Renewed U.S.-Canada trade friction baffles former Indianapolis mayor – Indianapolis News | Indiana Weather | Indiana Traffic

INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) — President Donald Trump on late Thursday night announced he is ending all trade talks with Canada following an advertisement by Ontario’s government featuring Ronald Reagan criticizing tariffs.

Former Indianapolis Mayor Greg Ballard stopped by News 8 at 5 p.m. on Friday to talk about the decision. “Canada, until 2023, was the No. 1 trading partner with the United States. It’s now No. 2 to Mexico.”

The United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement trade pact, signed in 2018 and effective in 2020, set tariffs and trade rules between the United States, Mexico, and Canada. Despite the agreement, tensions have resurfaced, leading to the current situation.

The former Republican mayor emphasized the importance of the trade relationship, noting that the U.S. exports more goods to Canada than any other country, while Canada is a major source of imports for the U.S.

The former mayor expressed confusion over the renewed friction. “We export more of our goods to Canada than any other country, and we’re third as far as importing from Canada. So it’s a major, major trading partner. Has been for decades. Canada is very similar to the U.S. in how we run goods and what we like and the food we eat. Everything is very similar. And why this friction is going on makes zero sense.”
