OHIO (WOWK) — National Move Over Day happened over the weekend, a reminder that flashing lights on the roadside mean someone’s life is on the line, and this year, the message carried a deeper meaning in Ohio.
On Thursday, Ohio State Highway Patrol Trooper Nicholas P. Cayton was killed while assisting a disabled semi on State Route 11.
His death is a reminder of why move over laws exist in states like Ohio, West Virginia and Kentucky. They protect those working along busy roads, from law enforcement and first responders to tow truck operators and construction crews.
According to the Emergency Responder Safety Institute, 19 traffic incident management responders were killed due to roadside collisions across the U.S. this year alone.
