Temperatures will be warm again Monday and will stay that way for a little while. See the latest at KOB.com/Weather.
ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — The final full week of August means the end of the last month of meteorological summer but the record warmth and dryness aren’t letting up.
We’re on track for the record-warmest August, in terms of average temperature when combining morning lows and afternoon highs. When separating them into their respective categories, Albuquerque is also looking at the warmest average morning low (69.8 degrees) and the warmest average afternoon highs (96 degrees). Albuquerque has seen seven daily records tied or broken in August.
We’re also staring down our seventh-driest August in record-keeping history, dating back to 1891. The Albuquerque International Sunport has only observed 0.12″ of rain so far this month, which is roughly 0.9-inch below normal. Last week’s active weather helped.
The monsoon/heat high will sit over New Mexico for Monday. Leftover moisture under the high will allow for some isolated showers and storms to form over the high terrain. It’ll mainly favor northern and western New Mexico and eventually move into nearby highlands, valleys and low-lying areas.
A few thunderstorms may contain heavy rainfall and could lead to the National Weather Service issuing a few Flood Advisories and Flash Flood Warnings. This will mainly affect areas that have seen higher rainfall amounts in most recent days, as well as the Hermits Peak Calf Canyon burn scar.
A few thunderstorms may also produce some strong gusty winds. The Storm Prediction Center has outlined an area in a 1 out of 5 marginal risk of severe storms. The likely timeline is from 3-10 p.m.
Most southern areas are likely to stay dry and definitely will feel the heat.
Both Tuesday and Wednesday will likely see a slight uptick in storm coverage. There may be a more widespread marginal risk of excessive rainfall, leading to flash flooding. Wednesday evening may be the Metro’s best shot at storms in the extended forecast before triple-digits could return.
