CLOVIS, N.M. – An 85-year-old Clovis man rescued a puppy left on an ant hill to die, and Peanut is now recovering after urgent veterinary care.
Karl Korff, founder of Adopt A Pet Society, rescued Peanut after someone called his Clovis rescue last month about the puppy
“She has strips of hair missing. She has scabs all over her,” Korff said.
Korff, who started a dog rescue with his wife in Iowa in 1976 and later continued that work in New Mexico, told KOB 4 the puppy had severe injuries when he found her.
Korff said Peanut went to the vet the next day. He said she had mange, and ants were eating her hair and skin. After weeks of antibiotics, shots and antiseptic baths, Peanut started to recover.
“She just looked at you like…can’t you help me? That was it.” Korff said.
A lack of options in the Clovis area
Korff’s rescue is one of only a handful in Clovis, and Portales has fewer animal rescue options.
Portales is getting about $195,000 through the state’s Animal Welfare Program for a mobile kennel building that supports the care and sheltering of dogs and cats.
“You wish you could go ahead and take the whole umbrella of rescue, but it takes finances to do it.” Korff said. “If you take your time to care for some thing, that elevates you as a person. And I honestly believe that.”
Korff is starting a Peanut Fund to help other sick animals like her, and he plans to keep it separate from Adopt A Pet Society’s main fund for other expenses.
