Meet the pups here and see what EMCAP has been up to lately.

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — Say hello to Baloo and King Louie from the East Mountain Companion Animal Project and then Butterfly and Reagi from the City of Albuquerque’s shelters.

Baloo and King Louie are floofy, adorable pups who are making a big splash for EMCAP’s debut in the Love 4 Pets rotation. The pups are Australian Shepherd mix puppies who came through their Her Last Litter program. The program is offered to people who have accidental litters of puppies or kittens.

“We’ll pay for the mom to get spayed so she doesn’t have another one. It’s kind of ending that cycle of pet overpopulation in our area,” EMCAP Director Chelsea Worley said.

EMCAP is in their fifth year, officially as of Jan. 21. They’ve rescued around 2,000 pets in five years in not only the East Mountains near Albuquerque but also other shelters around New Mexico.

“We try to concentrate on the rural shelters,” Worley said. “We do stay very busy.”

Part of their work is hosting adoption events, like this Sunday’s event from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Woofgang Bakery on Coors Boulevard. You can learn about EMCAP here and meet their pups in the video above.

Here are Butterfly and Reagi:

Butterfly

Butterfly is a petite 10-year-old female Lab mix. After arriving at the shelter as a lost stray, Butterfly never lost her sparkle. She greets her favorite volunteer with a happy heart and trots to the play yard with the perfect mix of spunk and grace. On walks, she loves exploring the golf course and then settling in for cozy snuggles right afterward — your personal little cuddle bug.

Butterfly spent some time in a foster home. Her foster human said she is potty-trained, loves to sleep in bed with her person and knows sit and stay! She is great for getting harnessed and will sit and lick your hands while you get her ready for her outing.

Meet her at the Eastside Shelter.

Reagi

Reagi is a 3-year-old Labrador mix who is a staff and volunteer favorite. During a recent doggie day out, Reagi proved he’s ready for home life. He rode well in the car, stayed calm passing other dogs, appeared to be housebroken and settled in easily indoors. He also enjoys toys, loves tug-of-war and is excited to learn and please his people.

Reagi is looking for a fresh start and a soft place to land. Visit him at the Westside shelter.
