THE EFFIGIES
THURSDAY 7/9. Vino’s Brew Pub. 8 p.m. $15.
When John Kezdy, frontman for the influential Chicago punk band The Effigies, died in a bicycle accident in 2023, towering producer Steve Albini tweeted the following: “John Kezdy was a hero of mine. Effigies were the first great band from Chicago’s scene … Not overstating to say that without John and the Effigies, I would never have made any records.” Just a year later, the band released “Burned,” their fifth album and the final recording to feature Kezdy. The blog Punk Rock Mag called it “grim, heavy, and uncomfortably honest — a final middle finger to false hope, polished scenes, and the ticking clock.” Though The Effigies have carried a variety of lineups since their inception in 1980, the crew on deck for this show at Vino’s Brew Pub includes two founding members: Paul Zamost on bass and Steven Economou on drums, both of whom rejoined the band in 2004.
