CHARLESTON, W.Va. (WOWK) — Protestors marched to the West Virginia state capitol Saturday as part of the latest No Kings Rally in Charleston.
Hundreds marched, chanted and sang as they made their way from the federal courthouse to the capitol building. The rally was just one of many held all over the country on Saturday.
Guest speakers took turns addressing the crowd from the Capitol steps, including Rev. Jim Lewis.
“We learned to make trouble. it’s in our bones to make trouble,” Rev. Lewis said. “We know, somehow, inside ourselves, that we stand against injustice and on behalf of love.”
Peggy Oldaker, the organizer of the rally, said, “Our founding fathers did not want a king, so here we are saying they didn’t want one then, and we don’t want one now.”
“We just ask that you come peacefully,” Oldaker said. “We do not start conflict. That’s not what this is about. We are here for a peaceful demonstration and hopefully to make change.”
The rally was organized by United West Virginia, a recently formed nonprofit. It’s the second No Kings Rally to be held in Charleston.
