LINCOLN, Neb. (KLKN) — Dozens of people lined the sidewalk in downtown Lincoln to protest the actions of Immigration and Customs Enforcement Officers.
The “ICE Out For Good” campaign spread across the country on Saturday, with thousands gathering in major cities.
“I’m very concerned for our country,” said protester Janet Morris.
The protest comes after the deadly shooting of 37-year-old Renee Good by an ICE agent in Minneapolis on Wednesday.
President Donald Trump’s administration said the officer acted in self defense after the woman tried to run him over.
“The precedent here is very simple,” Vice President JD Vance said. “You have a federal law enforcement official engaging in federal law enforcement action. That’s a federal issue. That guy is protected by absolute immunity. He was doing his job.”
The group stood outside the Nebraska federal building as they made signs, waved flags and chanted for an end to ICE.
One of their main goals was to shine a light on the violence and call for others to join their mission.
“I want Americans to wake up,” Morris said. “What I see too much of, ‘oh I’m overwhelmed, I don’t want to be involved, oh I just want to live my life.’ They don’t realize that what’s happening at a national level will affect them. It’s already affecting them. You can’t bury your head in the sand.”
After protesting, the group held a vigil to remember the lives lost at the hands of ICE agents.
For many of those who showed up, they say standing up for human rights was an easy decision.
“We’re talking about people being disappeared in our own country,” Joseth Moore said. “And what I mean by disappeared, as in killed or picked up by ICE. I don’t have any hope for this country to be honest with you. But I have to fight. I have to fight for myself, for my family.”
