DURANGO, Colo. (KRQE) – It’s a proposal to get trail users to slow down on a busy trail in a southwest Colorado city. Durango city councilors will soon decide whether to add a speed limit to the Animas River Trail and others like it in the city, and violators would face fines.

The City of Durango said the proposal comes in response to increased usage of the city’s trail network and growing concerns about safety conflicts between pedestrians and those on e-bikes and bicycles. Right now, there are no formal speed limits on the multi-use trails, but the proposed speed limit is 10 miles per hour when other users are present. The ordinance would apply to bicycles, scooters, skateboards, or similar devices and would include motorized devices.
The city would enforce this rule through its police department, saying violators would get a ticket and be charged at least a hundred dollars in fines.
The citations would be at the discretion of the officers. The city said the law would still allow people to ride together in the same direction faster than 10 miles per hour, provided other trail users are not present.
The city said bike riders and even those running without speedometers would be expected to estimate their own speed.
If passed, the city said it would also install speed limit signs.
