ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — President Donald Trump proposed renaming New Mexico as “New America” in a post made Sunday on his social media platform.

The president posted Sunday morning on Truth Social with a photo showing the map of New Mexico with “Mexico” crossed out and replaced with “America”.

This comes after the president has signed executive orders, renaming Gulf of Mexico and Lake Ontario as “Gulf of America” and “Lake America”. The orders change how the federal government and federal maps refer to these places. However, the president — Trump or someone else in the future — could sign orders reversing those changes.

Each state reserves the power over its name as the U.S. Constitution doesn’t explicitly give that power to the federal government. It’s highly unlikely our state would approve changing its name to “New America”.

“You don’t get to erase New Mexico. Not our name, not our history. Not our culture.
 The President may want to call us “New America,” but we know who we are,” Democratic U.S. Rep. Gabe Vasquez stated.
