Oregon Ducks receiver Jeremiah McClellan hauled in two long catches on Saturday and finished the day with three receptions for 78 yards.
But it was a catch that wasn’t recorded as a reception that might have been McClellan’s most memorable grab in Oregon’s 26-14 road victory against Washington.
Ducks quarterback Dante Moore targeted McClellan on the first play of the fourth quarter, lofting a pass down the right sideline as McClellan faced one-on-one coverage against Huskies cornerback Dylan Robinson.
McClellan reached out with his right hand, cradling the ball for a one-handed catch and then pinning it to his helmet as he fell to the turf at Husky Stadium. The ball touched the field as McClellan hit the ground, but video replays seemed to show that the UO receiver maintained his grip on the ball all the way through. The play was ruled incomplete on the field, though. Oregon coach Dan Lanning challenged the call, but after review the ruling of an incompletion was upheld.
Still, it was an amazing grab by McClellan. CBS analyst Gary Danielson certainly was impressed.
“I’m going to call that the best non-catch I’ve ever seen,” Danielson said on the CBS broadcast.
McClellan’s other catches on the day went for 35, 2 and 41 yards.
The Ducks had a big day through the air overall, with Moore going 20 of 29 for 286 yards and a touchdown. Malik Benson led the receiving corps with five catches for 102 yards, including a 64-yard touchdown reception midway through the fourth quarter that iced the game for Oregon (11-1, 8-1 Big Ten).
