A driver who evaded a traffic stop crashed into another vehicle early Saturday morning in the 1600 block of West Pinhook Road in Lafayette, killing one person and injuring three, police said.

Larry Hamilton, 22 of Broussard, was booked into the Lafayette Parish Correction Center on one count of negligent homicide and three counts of negligent injuring, the Lafayette Police Department said in a release.

Lafayette officers were assisting State Police in response to a 2012 Ford F-150 fleeing a traffic stop about 2:30 a.m., according to the release. While evading law enforcement, the driver ran a red light at the intersection of La Rue France and West Pinhook Road and crashed into a 2018 Chevrolet Impala.

A passenger in the Impala sustained severe injuries and died at the scene, police said. The driver and another passenger in the Impala sustained serious injuries and were hospitalized in critical condition, while a passenger in the F-150 sustained moderate injuries and was in stable condition.

After medical evaluation, Hamilton was taken to the jail. He will face additional charges of driving while intoxicated, aggravated flight from an officer and other traffic counts from the Louisiana State Police.

West Pinhook Road is now open, and the crash remains under investigation by the Lafayette Police Department Traffic Unit.
