Obituary: Dr. Timothy Edward Dutton

Dr. Timothy Edward Dutton

SCARBOROUGH – Dr. Timothy Edward Dutton, beloved father, son, brother, fiancé, and friend, passed away peacefully on Oct. 15, 2025, at Maine Medical Center, surrounded by loved ones.

Tim lived his life with joy, optimism, and humor, known for his adventurous spirit and his ability to make every experience memorable.

Born on Jan. 9, 1959, in Burlington, Wash., he was the first son of Donna Colleran and Merwyn Dutton. He grew up in Spokane and University Place, Wash., where he excelled in football and was recognized for his natural leadership and quick wit. Tim earned his bachelor’s degree in English from Western Washington University, spending his college years alternating between semesters of study and seasons of skiing, working, and sailing in the Virgin Islands and on Cape Cod.

Tim earned his Doctor of Medicine degree from Hahnemann University in Philadelphia, completed his residency in anesthesiology at Maine Medical Center, and a fellowship in pediatric anesthesiology at Boston Children’s Hospital. He approached challenges with determination and was beloved for his humor and humility both inside and outside the hospital.

Outside of work, Tim was happiest outdoors—skiing, sailing, or surfing—and shared his love of adventure with family and friends. He approached life with a “work hard, play hard” spirit and filled his days with travel, music, and connection.

In March 2024, while skiing in Colorado, Tim sustained a spinal cord injury that left him quadriplegic. Despite immense challenges, his grace, humor, and resilience never wavered. He continued to inspire others through his courage and gratitude for a life well-lived.

Tim is survived by his mother, Donna Colleran of Tacoma, Wash., his father, Merwyn Dutton of Mount Vernon, Wash.; his daughter, Alexandria Dutton (Santiago Castro Valencia) of Boston, Mass.; two brothers, Terry Dutton of Scottsdale, Ariz., and Michael Dutton of Mountlake Terrace, Wash., three sisters, Angela Colleran of Tacoma, Wash., Julia Colleran of Nashville, Tenn., and Lisa Lomsdalen of Alger, Wash.; his fiancée, Dr. Nina Morrissette, and her children, Evan and Alyssa Morrissette, all of Cape Elizabeth; and many cousins, nieces, and nephews.

A private celebration of life will be held in November for his family and close friends.
