Dennis Michael Smith

Dennis Michael Smith, 83, formerly of Shelburne, Vt., and most recently of Essex Junction, Vt., and Venice, Fla., passed away on June 28, 2026, with his wife by his side.

Dennis was a steady, hardworking man whose greatest pride was his family. He will be remembered for his quiet strength, his loyalty and the way he showed up for the people he loved without hesitation. Above all, he was a devoted husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather whose life centered on the people closest to him.

Born in Geneva, N.Y., he was the son of Charles and Margaret Smith. He grew up in Waterloo, N.Y., where he attended Waterloo High School. He went on to earn an associate of applied science degree in business administration from Auburn Community College and a bachelor of science degree in business administration from Trinity College.

On October 2, 1965, Dennis married Patricia (Pioli) Smith in Waterloo, N.Y. Their marriage spanned 60 years and became the foundation of a life built on love, commitment and family. Together, they created a home filled with lasting memories, support and deep devotion.

He proudly served in the United States Air Force from 1964 to 1968, attaining the rank of sergeant. During his service he was stationed in Plattsburgh, N.Y., and in the Philippines. He was honorably discharged and awarded the National Defense Service Medal and the Air Force Good Conduct Medal.

Dennis began his professional career at Goulds Pumps in 1973 and joined Hayward Tyler Pump Company in 1976, where he dedicated 30 years of service. He was respected throughout his career for his steady leadership and work ethic. Rising from application engineer to president, he earned the trust and respect of colleagues over decades of commitment. While working there, he obtained his real estate license alongside a longtime friend, and together they worked in real estate sales, forming yet another meaningful chapter in his professional life.

Some of his happiest moments were spent golfing with close friends and family, boating on Lake Champlain, traveling, and, most of all, watching his children and grandchildren participate in sporting events. He rarely missed an opportunity to be present for the people he loved. In retirement, Dennis embraced a slower pace of life that centered on family and the enjoyment of the simple things. He spent winters in Florida, where he enjoyed meeting new people and building lasting friendships that became an important part of his life.

He is predeceased by his parents, Charles and Margaret Smith, and his brothers Stephen Smith and Mark Smith.

Dennis is survived by his wife, Patricia Smith; children, Kimberly (Barry) Sanborn, Jeffrey (Heather) Smith, Lynn (Dean) Habbestad and Michele (Dean) Emmons; grandchildren, Taylor Sanborn, Alexis (James) Emery, Morgan Sanborn, Madison Sanborn, Stella Smith, Grady Emmons and Luke Emmons; great-grandchildren, Sophie and William Emery, who brought him his greatest joy in recent years; and his siblings James “Chip” Smith, Susan Doyle and Bernard Smith; as well as many nieces, nephews, cousins and close friends who became family over the years.

The family extends heartfelt gratitude to the staff at Grand Living at Wellen Park in Venice, Fla., and the Residence at Quarry Hill in South Burlington, Vt., for their compassionate care, kindness and support during his brief stays.

Visitation will be held on Thursday, July 9, 2026, 4 to 6 p.m., at Corbin & Palmer Funeral Home in Shelburne, Vt. Funeral services will take place on Friday, July 10, 2026, 11 a.m., at St. Catherine of Siena in Shelburne, Vt., with burial to follow at Shelburne Village Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association in memory of Dennis Smith. The family will be notified of all donations made in his honor. For the link to donate, please visit vtfuneralhomes.com.

Dennis will be remembered most for his devotion to his family, his steady and generous presence, and the lasting love he gave so freely to those around him.
