Shots were fired at police but no officers were hurt Monday afternoon after an attempted traffic stop in the Jefferson Park neighborhood on the city’s Northwest Side, authorities said.
An officer tried to perform a traffic stop on a Jeep in the 4800 block of North Milwaukee at about 4:10 p.m. when the driver struck the officer’s marked police vehicle and fled, according to Chicago police. The driver proceeded to fire at least one shot, striking the officer’s car, police said.
After continuing to drive to the 4500 block of North Meade Avenue, the driver got into another crash with a second marked squad car, police said. The driver fled on foot but was ultimately taken into custody at the 6100 block of West Eastwood, about a mile away from the initial attempted traffic stop.
No officers were struck and there were no other reported injuries, police said, noting that officers did not return fire.
Police recovered a firearm from the offending vehicle.
Charges were pending Monday evening as Grand Central area detectives investigated.
