New Speed Camera Fines Starting Oct. 1 in Maryland

MARYLAND – Police departments across the state are reminding residents of the upcoming changes to the fine structure for Speed Monitoring Systems.

Previously, all speed camera violations resulted in a civil citation of $40, regardless of the speed. Under the new system, fines will still be civil citations, but the amounts will vary depending on the speed over the limit.

Drivers speeding 12 to 15 miles per hour over the posted limit will be fined $40.
Drivers speeding 16 to 19 miles per hour over the posted limit will be fined $70.
Drivers speeding 20 to 29 miles per hour over the posted limit will be fined $120.
Drivers speeding 30 to 39 miles per hour over the posted limit will be fined $230.
Drivers speeding more than 40 miles per hour over the posted limit will be fined $425.

This change comes as a result of House Bill 182, which was passed by the Maryland General Assembly on May 13. The penalty structure will be effective Oct. 1.
