SOUTH CHARLESTON, W.Va. (WOWK) — A new roundabout in South Charleston is open and ready for drivers, a development city officials hope will ease traffic congestion that has been a constant in that area for years.

The roundabout, which opened Tuesday, is a part of the interchange at Kanawha Turnpike on Jefferson Road.

The bridge will now carry one lane of traffic, both north and south, as contractors work on the final phase of construction.

Mayor of the City of South Charleston, Frank Mullens, says he thinks traffic will be better, but encourages drivers to proceed with caution as they adjust.

“We’re all a little bit different,” Mullens said. “I think once they get the hang of it, they’ll realize the continuous flow of traffic is such a beneficial thing for all of us that use that area.”

The area has been under construction for several years, creating congestion for commuters.

Now, with the new roundabout in place, drivers can begin to anticipate a quicker trip in the car.

Brent Walker, the executive director of communications for the West Virginia Department of Transportation, made it clear there are more roundabouts to come.

“From our standpoint, roundabouts aren’t going anywhere,” one official said. “As a matter of fact, their use is going to increase across the state. Anywhere it looks like a good idea, we’ll have those discussions with local communities and the traveling public to ensure they’re comfortable with the design.”
