CANTON, S.D. (KELO) — Hot summer days just got cooler in Canton.

The city’s new pool opened Monday.

The sound of kids splashing around at the city pool is back in Canton.

Six-year-old Rorri Sehr tried out the pool on opening day.

“I’m going to swim in the Canton pool and try and find some new friends,” Sehr said.

The pool committee chairman says the project dates back to 2017.

“We started fundraising, we started working with the city, we started applying for grants,” Committee Chair Todd Gannon said.

The previous Canton pool had been showing its age and becoming difficult to maintain.

“And then kind of the nail in the coffin we had an electrical fire in the pump room and it kind of burned everything up,” Todd Gannon said.

2020 was the last year Canton had a pool season, until now.

“One of the things we did was bring in the large water feature with about 20 different features on there for the kids to play. We put in a high dive for the older kids as well as a water walk,” Todd Gannon said.

And now it’s time for swimmers to enjoy it.

“It gives people something to do. It gets people to cool off, makes them not have to go to other towns, makes it really local so people can just walk right over and swim,” Swimmer Aiden Gannon said.

The pool is open seven days a week, weather permitting.
