New Missouri Law Requires Safe Digging Practices Starting August 28

Missourians planning any kind of digging project — from installing a fence to planting trees — will soon need to follow new safety guidelines under a law taking effect August 28.

Senate Bill 133, signed into law earlier this summer, mandates that anyone planning to excavate must contact Missouri 811 at least two business days before starting work. The goal is to prevent injuries, service disruptions, and costly damage to underground utility lines.

The law introduces several key changes:

  • Advance Notification: Excavators must notify Missouri 811 at least two business days before beginning any digging.
  • Project Timeline: Work must be completed within 21 days of the start date. If the project extends beyond that window, a new 811 ticket is required.
  • Unmarked Facilities: If an excavator encounters an unmarked underground facility, they are required to report it to Missouri 811.

Ameren Missouri is urging residents to take the law seriously and to always request fresh markings before digging — even if lines were marked for a previous project.

The 811 service is free and available 24/7, making it easy for homeowners and contractors to comply.
