SANTA FE, N.M. — New Mexico Medicaid now covers traditional healing practices for certain Native American Medicaid members.
Members in participating tribes, nations or pueblos can receive coverage for health services certified traditional healers provide.
“Our state’s diverse cultural heritage is one of our greatest strengths. Traditional healing practices have played a vital role in community health and well-being for generations of Native Americans,” said Cabinet Secretary Kari Armijo. “We are pleased to be one of the first states to offer this coverage expansion to eligible Medicaid members as part of their comprehensive care.”
New Mexico Medicaid worked with tribal leaders, traditional healers, community advocates and clinical partners to develop this. The emphasis was on respect for cultural integrity, provider autonomy and member choice, according to the New Mexico Health Care Authority.
“By integrating traditional healing, New Mexico is expanding meaningful access to care that aligns with individuals’ values, beliefs, and cultural identities,” said Alanna Dancis, acting Medicaid director. “This benefit supports health equity and honors the voices of New Mexicans who have long advocated for inclusive, culturally rooted health solutions.”
Traditional healing will be reimbursed to Indian Health Services providers. They will follow defined rates with quality assurance processes co-designed with participating communities. The goal is to support authentic cultural practices and maintain accountability and program integrity.
