New Little Library opens in Addison to expand rural reading access

ADDISON, Vt. (WCAX) – A new little library opened Saturday outside the Addison Town Clerk’s Office as part of an effort to make reading more accessible in rural areas.

About a dozen people attended the ribbon cutting ceremony for the new book exchange box. Representatives from the Bixby Free Library unveiled the unmanned take one-leave one book exchange.

The library comes as a kit and was assembled by the Vergennes Leos. The goal is to take the library to the people, organizers said.

“Trying to improve our outreach to patrons in our rural towns that we serve and we’re trying to bring the Bixby out of just Vergennes and increase access to reading in all of the towns,” said Miranda DeGreenia of the Bixby Free Library.

There were so many donations on the first day that they all couldn’t fit in the box. DeGreenia said she plans to check in at least once every two weeks to make sure the library is well stocked and hopes to see more Little Libraries pop up in the future.
