LAS VEGAS (KLAS) – A new development is on the way for those seeking affordable housing.
The City of Las Vegas just approved a 282-unit senior apartment complex to be built on 15 acres of land on Hickam Avenue and Jordanville Street in the northwest valley.
Located on federal land, the City of Las Vegas is working with HUD and the Bureau of Land Management to get construction underway by the end of 2025.
“We have a huge shortage of housing for individuals on fixed income, so that includes seniors and people that are on disabilities,” City of Las Vegas Neighborhood Services Director Arcelia Barajas explained.
“We are trying to bring some housing that will prevent people from becoming homeless or having to move in with family and friends. We want to help people age in place and with some dignity,” she added.

Residents, including Tori Harris, said she’s noticed an influx of families moving in together to cut costs.
“It seems like the market is moving towards people living together because it is so hard for seniors to afford living right now,” Harris said.
Barajas also acknowledged that the term “affordable housing” looks a lot different nowadays than before.
“I think when we think about what this type of housing looked like in the past, we think of ‘project developments’ or those that may have been considered substandard,” she said.
“Now, we’ve moved away from that, and we have individuals that are working at our local Starbucks or in our casinos that qualify for this type of housing,” she added.
8 News Now heard from those in favor of the three-story build, and also from community members like Kathleen Gentry, who lives right across from where it’s being built.
Gentry is worried it will bring more traffic to an already busy side street.
“As you can see, the road that they want to build on is a dead end. We’ve already got so many people from the other neighborhood parking along Hickam Avenue. It’s going to create congestion that they cannot mitigate,” Gentry told 8 News Now.
