Neighbors react to news that a man was shot in the head on Monday in Lincoln

LINCOLN, Neb. (KLKN) – Lincoln Police Crime Investigators could be seen coming in and out of an apartment building at 13th and C streets on Monday, hours after a shooting occurred in front of it.

Neighbors told Channel 8 that they were not surprised by the incident as concerns over violence in the area have grown over the last few decades.

“Well, it doesn’t surprise me that you have things like that, but this sort of thing comes in waves,” said Clif Bridges, who has lived in the near south neighborhood of Lincoln for 30 years.

“You know, you never know around here because people start stuff with you for no reason,” said resident Brooke Smith.

During Monday’s shooting, a 32-year-old man was shot in the head in front of the apartment building by 13th and C.

LPD reports that the bullet did not penetrate his skull, and the victim was able to make his way to 14th and B street before officers showed up a few minutes later.

Bridges says the building where the gunfire happened used to be filled with grad students.

“We walked to the grocery store. There was a convenience store here. There was a family restaurant down the street,” he described.

Today that building is home to the accused shooter.

The police identified the suspect as 38-year-old Stanley Murray, who is now in custody for second degree assault and use of a firearm to commit a felony.

Smith has been living in the area for nearly a decade and says things have become progressively worst with crime and vagrancy.

“There’s always something. There’s always something going on whether it’s drugs or violence or whatever,” said Smith.

Adding, “It’s like the second, third incident like this we’ve had over here. There was two murders you know, in the last two years down there and then this today.”

Smith told Channel 8 that she rushed home from work on Monday after receiving numerous calls about the shooting.

“When I came down to talk to my neighbor, I came down that way and they [the police] just said they’re scanning things inside so we just can’t go in that way,” she said.

When she arrived, Smith says police were setting up cones inside her apartment building.

Lincoln Police said they found the gun they believed was used in the shooting in a nearby sewer.

Everett Elementary School is located just a few blocks from the crime scene.

The school heightened security briefly, but the action was soon lifted after the suspect was arrested.

At this time, what led up to the incident is still under investigation and police encourage the public to come forward with tips by contacting crime stoppers.
