NC's State Auditor releases DMV audit findings

RALEIGH, N.C. (WNCN) — State Auditor Dave Boliek held a press conference Monday discussing the findings of the North Carolina Office of the State Auditor’s audit of the North Carolina Division of Motor Vehicles.

This comes after the Office of the State Auditor released preliminary information from the investigation into the DMV in June, which showed a need for additional staff and flexibility in the workforce.

“With DMV staffing adjustments being considered during current budget negotiations, the professional team at the Office of the State Auditor and I feel the responsibility to provide pertinent information ahead of the full audit release,” Boliek said in the June press release. “Our data-driven analysis indicates that current DMV workforce levels are insufficient to meet the needs of North Carolinians. To provide citizens the service level they expect and deserve, the DMV must have more employees in its offices. I have personally shared these observations with Governor Stein, Senator Berger, Speaker Hall, Secretary Hopkins, and DMV Commissioner Tine.”

The June report highlighted a need for more driver’s license examiners, flexibility in personnel rules in order to all the DMV to hire staff more efficiently, and that strategies were needed to fill vacancies.

According to the auditor’s office, a reliance on temporary positions created challenges in the division.

“Temporary positions are harder to fill, offer fewer benefits, and result in additional training costs due to high turnover,” the OSA said in the release. “Of the DMV’s 142 temporary examiner positions, 97 (68%) remain vacant.)

The auditor’s office said addressing the issues with staffing were crucial to fix the problems the DMV is facing, such as delays and excessive wait times for customers.
