CHARLESTON, WV (WOWK) – Friday marked the first chapter of a new era for many people in Charleston as they took the oath of allegiance to officially become United States citizens.
The naturalization ceremony took place at the Robert C. Byrd Courthouse in Charleston, where around 50 people took part in the process.
Chief U.S. District Judge Frank Wolk presided over the ceremony and handed out the certificates that symbolize the years of hard work, sacrifice and dedication these folks gave to complete this journey.
One new citizen shared why this ceremony was such a special moment to her.
“To come and share a common aspiration to live in a free country full of opportunity and justice and be welcomed as part of the fabric of life,” said Pediatric Doctor Inas al-Attar.
Friends and family were at the ceremony to share the moment with many of those taking their oath of allegiance.
