KNIGHTDALE, N.C. (WNCN) — Troopers and emergency crews are investigating what led to a serious crash early Saturday morning on Interstate 87.

According to the North Carolina State Highway Patrol, first responders were called to a crash around 7:20 a.m. on I-87 near mile marker 11. Upon arrival, troopers said they found an SUV and a truck with lumber in the back of its trailer had crashed into the median underneath the Wendell Falls Parkway overpass.

CBS 17 was on the scene when the ambulance arrived, and the truck still appeared rested to the bridge’s column. The crew saw the trailer raised and sitting upright — however, the truck and SUV overturned.

State Highway Patrol told CBS 17 that, according to their investigation, a white SUV made an unsafe lane change, colliding into the lumber-hauling Chevy Silverado.

A trooper on the scene said it does not appear that the bridge was unharmed by the crash. The trooper said three people sustained non-life-threatening injuries as a result of the crash. Charges are pending while troopers actively continue their investigation.

According to the Department of Transportation, they expect both sides of I-87 to be cleared by 10:30 a.m. Right now, at least one lane going north and southbound is closed as crews clear the scene.
