ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — Showers and storms will continue to fizzle out Wednesday across New Mexico after some much-needed rain overnight.
Storms out to the east pushed out an outflow boundary, helping to move the frontal boundary that we’ve had for a couple of days up and partially over the Sandia Mountains. Breezy easterly canyon gap winds continued this morning, with sustained winds around 25-35 mph and gusts up to 45 mph.
The monsoon/heat high will be centered over the southwestern quadrant of New Mexico, keeping things mostly dry and hot for those in that region. A disturbance will clip the northeastern side of the state.
The high-pressure system has decreased roughly about a decameter in strength over the last 24 hours. This will help to decrease high temps this afternoon by about one-to-four degrees compared to yesterday’s readings. Moisture will still sneak under the high for those in the high terrain in southwestern New Mexico for some shower and storms to form but are likely going to fizzle out before trying to move out of the mountains.
A good portion of the state will have at least some chance of rain, ranging in isolated to scattered coverage. Areas along the Central Mountain Chain and east may get the bulk of the activity, although it may come at a cost.
The Storm Prediction Center has outlined almost all of eastern New Mexico in a severe threat. Most areas are in a 1 out of 5 marginal risk. Although, the very northernmost areas of Colfax and Union County are in a 2 out of 5 slight risk.
Several storms will be capable of producing damaging wind gusts of 60-70 mph. Large hail will be more of a concern for the northeastern quadrant of New Mexico. Locally heavy rainfall may influence flash flooding concerns. Most likely timeline for this will be around 1-10 p.m.
Computer models are not in exact agreement on where the monsoon high will end up Thursday. Drier air looks to push in on Friday, which would hinder storm development.
