MONTGOMERY, W.Va. (WOWK) – After nearly four years of frustration and obstacles, the Montgomery bridge is finished with renovations.
The bridge, formally called the Earl M. Vickers Memorial Bridge, began heavy construction back in 2022.
Phase one of the project cost around $13 million and included new signs, ramps, and lighting, with the process taking about a year to complete.
The next phase was painting, which took nearly two years to complete and cost around $9 million, according to Montgomery Mayor Greg Ingram.
The bridge has been open for about a week, and Ingram says he’s only heard good comments. He said he has even seen several residents taking pictures of the completed bridge, something he is proud to see.
“There’s a lot of things on social media about the Montgomery bridge. Montgomery has a deep history and people have crossed that bridge from every (WVU) tech since 1895,” Ingram said.
He says he likes to see the residents admire the bridge, after they have been patient with the ongoing changes throughout the years.
“It’s really been frustrating for the local residents because it was down to one lane and then we had stoplights that nobody could get on it for a while and had to alternate traffic. It’s been really frustrating,” Ingram said,
Ingram says there will be a ribbon cutting to officially open the bridge on Friday, Nov. 14, at 10 a.m.
Governor Patrick Morrisey, West Virginia Department of Transportation and legislators from around the area will be in attendance.
The event will take place near the overpass ramp by the Tabit gazebo.
