Monmouth girls soccer falls to Ashland in Class D semifinals

Layla Burby scored twice, including the winner early in the second half, as top-seeded Ashland advanced to the Class D girls soccer state championship game with a 2-1 semifinal victory Wednesday against fifth-seeded Monmouth Academy, at Presque Isle.

The Hornets (16-0) will take on No. 2 Penobscot Valley (12-2-2) for the state title Saturday at Hermon.

Monmouth (9-6-2) took the lead with 20:19 remaining in the first half when Lauren Burnham got her foot on a loose ball in front and put it past the keeper. Ashland tied it with 18.5 seconds left in the half when Burby headed a corner kick inside the near post.
