Sheriffs from across Missouri have joined forces to create a new alliance focused on firearm education and safety.
Founding member of the Missouri Sheriff’s Constitutional Firearms Alliance and Audrain County Sheriff Matt Oller told Missourinet this came about after many discussions about firearms legislation.
“Every time a cry goes out for more regulation, we know there are already laws on the books that cover everything that you can possibly do wrong with a gun,” said Oller. “So, you know, new regulations are not what’s needed– its firm enforcement of the laws that already exist.”
Gun safety and defending the Second Amendment are the stated goals of the newly formed group. About 20 sheriffs from across the Show-Me state spoke at a news conference at the Capitol this week. Sheriff Oller told Missourinet there is not a gun problem there is a mental health problem.
“Even if this firearms alliance was not formed, sheriffs are constantly trying to get better mental health services because you know, our jails have turned into places where mentally ill people windup because there’s no mental health facilities for them and they wind up committing crimes as a result of the mental health issue,” said Oller.
The Alliance is also planning to host safety training events in the near future.
