(Jefferson City, MO) — Missouri Governor Mike Kehoe has signed a bill into law (SF81) aimed at boosting public safety. The new law includes an increase in protections for victims of childhood sexual abuse, including a key provision called Trey’s Law. It means non-disclosure agreements or N-D-A’s will no longer be enforceable after August 28th of this year. Trey’s Law is named in honor of Trey Carlock, a sexual abuse victim, who died by suicide.
The new public safety law also broadens the list of criminal acts that qualify as childhood sexual abuse. Other parts of the law include an extension of the Line of Duty Compensation Act for another six years, it expands criminal background checks, and updates fireworks regulations. The bill was sponsored by state Senator Kurtis Gregory and Representative Tim Taylor.
