Thursday, June 19th is a federal holiday and commemorates the day in 1865 that officially marked the end of slavery in the United States.
Stock markets will be closed and there will be no U.S. mail delivery, however, other delivery services such as UPS and FedEx will be available.
Local celebration on Thursday includes events at the Missouri Botanical Garden and History Museum in St. Louis, Douglass Park in Columbia, and the JuneteenthKC Cultural Parade at noon in Kansas City.
Communities across Missouri will be celebrating Juneteenth over the next several days.
Katina Colon, Pastor of Fifth Street Christian Church in mid-Missouri’s Columbia told Missourinet the event can also serve as a community conversation.
“Our focus this year is not only to celebrate Juneteenth amongst the community but also try to narrow it down to what are the issues we seem to be having in the community, and we wanted to focus on mental health,” said Colon. “All family-oriented events, whether it’s about the kids, it’s about the family, there is something for everyone to do.”
Juneteenth has been a federal holiday since 2021.
In Missouri, Juneteenth is a state holiday, with most local governments and all state offices closed. Essential services will still be operating, such as law enforcement and prisons.
