Miley Cyrus says Lorne Michaels convinced her not to quit music after ‘medical emergency’

Miley Cyrus reveals she wanted to leave the music industry after a scary incident during her New Year’s Eve special in 2023.

During an appearance on Wednesday’s episode of “The Zane Lowe Show‚” the 32-year-old hitmaker said that while she was co-hosting “Miley’s New Year’s Eve Party” with her godmother Dolly Parton, she had a health scare that really stuck with her.

“I had a medical emergency. I had an ovarian cyst rupture. We didn’t know exactly what was going on so we did it. It was pretty traumatic because it was extremely excruciating and I did the show anyway. But it was really, really hard on me,” Cyrus revealed.

Per John Hopkins, a ruptured ovarian cyst isn’t always a cause for concern, but in some cases, it can lead to sepsis, a life-threatening immune response to harmful bacteria.

Besides hosting and performing on the NBC program, Cyrus served as one of its executive producers alongside “Saturday Night Live” head honcho Lorne Michaels.

After the show, Cyrus said she contemplated quitting music. However, a conversation with Michaels turned everything around.

“I had dinner with Lorne and he said something that now has stuck with me. He goes, ‘Six months. Everybody has six months to feel sorry for themselves and then we start to rebuild.’”

She continued: “He’s like, ‘You have no idea how many artists have sat in this chair and told me they were quitting music. Everyone does this, everyone has these traumatic experiences.’”

Fortunately, she took his words to heart and got back in the studio in due time.

Cyrus’s ninth studio album “Something Beautiful” is set to be released on May 30.

In addition to the “Hannah Montana” alum suffering from an ovarian cyst rupture, she’s also suffers from the vocal disorder, Reinke’s edema, which she described as “abuse of the vocal cords” on “The Zane Lowe Show.” She also said there’s a large polyp on her vocal cord.

“It’s extremely difficult to perform with, because it’s like running a marathon with ankle weights on,” Cyrus explained of the polyp.

According to Cleveland Clinic, Reinke’s edema is a noncancerous vocal cord disorder that occurs when fluid builds up in the outer layer of your vocal folds. It’s common among people with a long-term smoking history, but those who have repetitive vocal trauma, such as a performer, are also prone to it. It can be treated, but not entirely cured.

While the polyp on Cyrus’ vocal cord could potentially be removed, the “Flowers” singer claimed she doesn’t want to remove it. ”I’m not willing to sever it, because the chance of waking up from a surgery and not sounding like myself is a probability.”
