KINDRED (NewsDakota)- The Carrington Cardinals had been rolling in October, having not lost a set, as they entered play at Kindred on Thursday, and were hopeful of being properly challenged.
They not only got that, but had plenty more to celebrate by nights’ end.
The top-ranked Cardinals defeated a game Kindred Vikings squad 3-1 (25-21, 22-25, 25-20, 25-23) on Thursday night and, in the process, junior Aniston Hoornaert collected her 2,000th career assist while junior Marah Johnson added her 500th career kill.
After a good start for the Cardinals (29-2), Kate Odegaard stepped up with a 5-0 run including three aces for the Vikings (17-12) which set the tone for a very close set. Carrington eventually pulled away slightly behind the hitting of Harper Kollman and the passing of Hoornaert to take the opening set.
Again Odegaard had a service run in her in the second set, and during the set Hoornaert reached the milestone. Worth noting, the school record is held by her sister with just over 2,600. Meanwhile, UND committ Taylor Sanders, playing through a broken bone in her foot, led the Kindred attack as they became the first team to take a best-of-five set off Carrington since Langdon on September 10th.
In the third set, the Vikings started red hot, scoring nine of the first eleven points of the set before the Cardinals rallied on the serves of seniors Calleigh Hewitt and Journey Peltier. In the process of scoring fifteen of the next nineteen, Johnson recorded her 500th kill on a cross court smash as Carrington re-took the lead.
The fourth set saw neither team lead by more than three, with Carrington getting great offensive balance from Kollman (14 kills), Johnson (11 kills), Mya Neis (10 kills), Hewitt (9 kills) and Maara Kutz (8 kills) to stave off a late rally for another win.
Carrington are back in action Monday night in Belcourt against Turtle Mountain with coverage on KDAK The Cardinal beginning at around 6:45pm.
