Some extra financial planning was needed for Independence Day celebrations in Missouri communities this year due to proposed tariffs.

In April, President Trump announced a 145% tariff on goods imported from China. According to data from the National Fireworks Association, about 99% of fireworks are made in China. Susan Paden, Treasurer of the Mexico, Missouri Noon Lions Club told Missourinet, her organization puts on a local display for the community and her fireworks distributor helped them avoid the tariffs.

“He text me the end of March and he gave me about 10 days to get him the rest of our quote,” said Paden. “He said we wouldn’t get hit with the tariff tax because he had some in stock already. If he had to reorder, it could be up to 137% increase.”

According to U.S. trade data, Missouri imported $85.7 worth of fireworks in 2024, the most per capita in the country at $13.84 per resident.
