Michigan to ring in New Year with coldest day of the week, sub-zero wind chills

If one of your New Year’s resolutions is to stop complaining about Michigan’s ever-changing weather, New Year’s Day will be the perfect time to put that into practice right away.

Temperatures are running below our late December average all week, but the statewide forecast shows Thursday will be the coldest day this week.

Cold temperatures on New Year’s Eve will lead to even colder daytime highs on the holiday. Places seeing the 20s now may drop into the teens on Thursday. Places in the Upper Peninsula and Northern Michigan now in the teens will see their daytime highs drop even lower.

In a lot of areas, we will also be feeling sub-zero wind chills.

“It will be cold for New Years Eve and those headed out should dress accordingly,” the National Weather Service team in Marquette said today. “Temperatures in the single digits and breezy conditions will result in sub-zero wind chills.”

Interior temperatures in parts of the U.P. could dip to -3 degrees early on New Year’s Day. The wind chills are forecast to be -21 in Ironwood, near the Wisconsin border, and -11 in Marquette.

Across the Lower Peninsula, temperatures won’t get quite that cold. In Detroit, New Year’s Day wind chills will start out around zero and warm into the single digits during the day.
