ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — The Bernalillo County Metropolitan Court is warning about a new scam involving fraudulent text messages claiming people owe outstanding traffic fines.
According to the court, officials have received numerous reports of people receiving text messages stating they have unpaid traffic fines. The messages state they must submit payment within two days – or show up to court to avoid additional fines, license suspension and court enforcement. The messages also include a payment link not associated with the courts.
“These messages are fraudulent,” Court Executive Officer Lissa Quintana said. “The Metropolitan Court does not contact individuals by text message nor phone if they owe outstanding fines. That would be communicated through the mail. The messages may appear convincing and may reference legitimate court-related language. But we urge the public to exercise caution and confirm with the court before acting.”
