The Anne Arundel County Public Schools’ Board of Education unanimously voted Wednesday night to reappoint Mark Bedell to a second four-year term as superintendent.

Anne Arundel’s superintendents are appointed to four-year terms that begin in July. The board unanimously selected Bedell in 2022 from nearly 50 applicants after declining to offer former Superintendent George Arlotto another contract following two terms.

“When we hired Dr. Bedell, we wanted a Superintendent who could build on what we had here in Anne Arundel County and move our school district from good to great,” Board President Gloria Dent said in a news release. “The relationships Dr. Bedell has created among our many partners and in the community and the work he and his team have done to create better learning environments for all of our students have us in a better place than we were four years ago. I look forward to even better things in the next four years.”

Bedell informed the board in January that wanted a second term.

Pending contract negotiations and final approval by the Maryland state superintendent, as required by law, Bedell’s second term will run through July 2030.
