MANDAN, ND (KXNET) — As part of a tradition honoring local veterans who served the United States, students at Mandan Middle School planted 120 flags in front of the school Thursday afternoon.
Students raised $1,352 for Disabled American Veterans (DAV) Field of Flags this year, placing the school 48th out of more than 1,000 that participated around the country.
Each flag is meant to honor and tell the story of a different hero who served in the armed forces. The planting of the flags serves as the culmination of a year-long effort to raise money for the DAV, helping provide support to veterans who need it most.

Students raised money by making posters with QR codes, asking friends and family, and selling suckers after school. People could also donate online. Braves advisory classes collected the money.

The advisory class that raised the most funds was that of Angela Wescott, making this the second year in a row her class won. This gave them the opportunity to go outside Thursday afternoon and plant the flags.
The school first participated in the nationwide effort last year, raising $1,194, which placed them 44th out of the 565 participating schools.
Wescott thanked the North Dakota Army National Guard recruiting office for donating bleacher seats, fleece blankets, bags, mini footballs, and many other items to help raise money. This helped 10 students collect enough funding to take home a flag, up from three last year. The school’s coffee shop, Braves Bistro Buddies, was also a key donor.
The top 10 students who raised the most money are:
- Elinor Schmidt (8th grade) – Top fundraiser, raising $100
- Deveyn MilBradt (8th grade)
- McKenna Pfaff (8th grade)
- Leland Perkins (8th grade)
- Ben Yantzer (8th grade)
- Emett Schleppenbach (8th grade)
- Sophie Thorson (8th grade)
- Kamden Kautzman (8th grade)
- Michael Klug (8th grade)
- Kamrynn Varianno (7th grade)
Each of these students had a donor put in at least $20, sponsoring a flag for a veteran, which they can pick up next week from Mrs. Wescott.
Just like last year, the students planted the flags the Thursday before Veterans Day. Flags will be taken down next week after the holiday, depending on the weather.
