An inmate escaped from the Tangipahoa Parish jail Thursday, the Sheriff’s Office said.

The Tangipahoa Parish Sheriff’s office said it received a call just before 10 p.m. asking whether Tra’Von Johnson, a 19-year-old inmate awaiting trial for his alleged role in a 2022 home invasion in the Hammond area that killed a man and injured the man’s child, was still in custody.

“After a headcount of the jail population and a review of Johnson’s movements throughout the day, it was determined Johnson escaped around 4:30 p.m. when another inmate helped lift him over the perimeter fence,” the Sheriff’s Office said in a news release.

The Sheriff’s Office said authorities have alerted victims about the escape and reached out to Johnson’s relatives and known associates.

Jail staff has confirmed Johnson, who is one of four inmates who escaped from the facility a year ago this month, is the only inmate missing following Thursday’s incident.
