GLASGOW — A Barren County who admitted guilt in a deadly 2024 stabbing was sentenced Thursday to 15 years in prison.
Dedontae Morrison, 27, of Glasgow, received the sentence in Barren Circuit Court after pleading guilty to charges of first-degree manslaughter and tampering with physical evidence.
Morrison was accused of causing the death of Robert Fields, 55, who was found stabbed to death March 28, 2024, at a residence on Lee Fendell Road.
A grand jury indicted Morrison on a count of murder, but Morrison avoided a jury trial and potential life sentence by pleading guilty in January.
At Thursday’s sentencing, Fields’ daughter and sister each read victim impact statements describing how they have been affected by Fields’ death.
Gena Greenwalt, Fields’ daughter, said she has struggled to come to terms with the tragedy and find a sense of peace over the nearly two years the case has been pending in the court system.
“I forgive you, but I’ll never forget what you’ve done to me and my family,” Greenwalt said while addressing Morrison. “You no longer have a hold on my emotions.”
Nettie Fields, Robert Fields’ sister, recalled her brother as a generous person who endured a number of personal problems but still tried to maintain close ties with his family.
“He may not have led a perfect life, but he did not deserve what you did to him,” Fields said.
The Barren County Sheriff’s Office investigated the incident.
According to prior court testimony, law enforcement became involved after a woman called 911 to report that Fields had been attacked, with the caller identifying Morrison as the assailant.
Fields’ body was found next to a bed in a bedroom in the Lee Fendell Road house.
A man fitting Morrison’s description was reportedly seen running from the home, and Morrison was detained by deputies after he was seen walking on Lee Fendell Road.
BCSO Detective Adam Bow testified in a 2024 hearing in Barren District Court that Morrison had cuts to his thumb and forefinger and apparent blood on his shoes and jacket cuffs.
Morrison agreed to speak with detectives at the homicide scene, during which he confessed to stabbing Fields in the bedroom with a silver-handled knife, and then washed the knife in a sink, Bow said.
“(Morrison) stated that after he stabbed (Fields), he cleaned the knife up by washing it in the sink,” Bow said.
An arrest citation said that Morrison did not provide a reason for the attack, but Bow testified in court that the 911 caller reported that Morrison had “put hands on” a woman in the house earlier in the day.
Morrison remains in Barren County Corrections Center under a $500,000 cash bond.
