INDIANAPOLIS — A man died late Friday afternoon after police officers heard shots fired and found him in a vehicle in a retail area on the northwest side of Indianapolis.
Medics and Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department were sent just before 5:30 p.m. Friday to 4150 Lafayette Road. That’s the address of a strip mall across the road from the former Lafayette Square Mall. The strip mall includes an international grocery store, a furniture store, a paint store, a grocery and two restaurants.
Officer Drew Brown said that about an hour after the shooting, officers were in the area when they heard gunfire, and, moments later, found a man critically injured in a vehicle in the parking lot of the strip mall. Medics later determined the man had died.
Brown said investigators believe the shooting was an isolated incident, but the exact circumstances were not immediately known.
No businesses or other property were damaged, he said.
Family members were on the scene trying to make sense of the violence, Brown said.
The officer said no one had been detained as investigators worked to gather information on who may have fired the shots.
Anyone with information was asked to call the IMPD homicide officer at 317-327-3475 or Crime Stoppers of Central Indiana.
