LSU fires Mass. native Brian Kelly after ugly loss to Texas A&M

LSU is moving on from Brian Kelly.

The Tigers informed the coach that they will part ways with him after a 5-3 start, ESPN’s Pete Thamel reported. The school will inform the team Sunday night.

Kelly’s buyout is $54 million.

Associate head coach Frank Wilson will serve as LSU’s interim coach.

Kelly, who’s from Everett and played linebacker at Assumption University, was hired by LSU in 2021 after he resigned from Notre Dame. He remains the Fighting Irish’s winningest coach with 113 wins.

The news comes after LSU suffered an ugly 49-25 loss to the Texas A&M on Saturday after a second-half meltdown by the Tigers. It marked LSU’s first loss in Death Valley to the Aggies since 1994.

LSU started the season 4-0, but Saturday’s loss caused the team to essentially fall out of College Football Playoff contention.

Kelly finishes his time at LSU with a 34-14 record in three-plus seasons.
