LOWVELO bike ride brings hundreds in the Lowcountry out in support of cancer research

CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCBD) – People across the Lowcountry gathered in Charleston for the annual LOWVELO bike ride fundraiser in support of cancer research at MUSC’s Hollings Cancer Center.

Researchers and staff at MUSC, like Marvella Ford, say this ride is personal, as someone who was diagnosed twice with breast cancer.

“I’m here today because of the research that’s being done,” Ford said. “So, being able to ride and participate in research at the Hollings Cancer Center is a double blessing.”

Several routes spanning14, 23, 50 and 80 miles began in downtown Charleston and ended on the Isle of Palms. Stationary bikes were also an option.

Ned Forney has participated in this event with his wife for years. After she passed away this summer, he says he rode on Saturday in honor of her.

“She was a big cyclist,” Forney said. “But, she couldn’t ride her bike because if she fell, she could break her bones because of her cancer, so we did the stationary bikes. Whether you do the ride on the road, or the stationary bike ride, or donate or cheer people on, it’s a great event.”

Throughout the fundraising effort, event organizers made it a priority to inform the community about the importance of this research.

“It’s important that we speak with our community members and we try to not just raise money, but educate them about the importance of cancer care and research,” event organizer Benjamin Toll said.

The LOWVELO ride raised more than $1 million last year, and set a goal of $1.4 million for this year’s fundraiser.
