Local ‘hero’ speaks to WCAX about South Burlington fire rescue

SOUTH BURLINGTON, Vt. (WCAX) – A local hero who helped rescue a South Burlington woman out of a burning apartment this week is telling his side of the story.

It happened Tuesday morning at the Town Square Apartments on Dorset Street. Authorities say the unnamed bystander was driving by when he saw smoke and called 911.

Jamie Strotmeyer told our Cam Smith he sensed something was wrong. After running in through the back slider, he heard a woman calling out for help and jumped into action.

Reporter Cam Smith: When hwe ear stories like this — and we see these types of things — we’ve heard the word hero. Do you feel that you fit that mold?

Jamie Strotmeyer: No. I think, honestly, I think anybody coming by that would have seen the flames and the smoke would have seen if there was anything they could do, would have done whatever they could to help someone.

The South Burlington Fire Department says the fire was caused by careless disposal of smoking materials that fell onto the bedding and started a fire in one of the bedrooms.

Both people inside were taken to the hospital for evaluations and released later that day.
