Local flights affected by government shutdown

WARWICK, R.I. (WPRI) — Local travelers are feeling the effects of flight delays and cancellations being caused by the ongoing government shutdown.

There weren’t many travelers at T.F. Green International Airport Saturday evening, but those who were leaving or coming home ran into some issues.

One person who 12 News spoke with said he had to cut his trip to Rhode Island short so he could get back home with ease.

“I had a lot of other things planned to do just over the next 24 hours here in Rhode Island,” Bob Beck, who was visiting from South Carolina, said. “And I decided to cut that short just to be safe and if there were any delays or cancellations, I would now have a little bit of margin to work with.”

Another traveler faced a couple of delays of nearly an hour for their flight.

“My first notification was about two hours ago,” Nancy Camara of Tiverton told 12 News. “It was originally supposed to be 5:36 and then they said 5:58, and now another one about 10 or 15 minutes ago. Two delays so far, about an hour total.”

Meanwhile some other travelers faced minimal obstacles. David Fox was visiting from Florida and said both of his flights “were fine.”

Those 12 News spoke with were also grateful for the federal employees at the airport still showing up despite not getting paid during the shutdown.

Travelers are also advised to plan ahead and pack their patience if flying throughout the coming days.
